Origins

Growing up in 1930s Brooklyn, Norman Schlaff earned a reputation as the best radio and TV repairman on the street.

Small jobs for friends and neighbors soon turned into a small business with customers throughout New York City eager to retain his services and inventions.

Norman, with the support of his wife Connie, founded Norcon Radio & Television in 1952, with just a few dollars and the first syllables of their first names. Norcon Communications Inc. was incorporated by their son Steven in 1980.

The Talk-Thru Unit (TTU)

In the 1970s, the Long Island Railroad had a problem. Thousands of passengers were moving through Pennsylvania Station each day buying tickets. Ticket sellers needed to securely sell tickets and guard their money.

The railroad set up glass partitions to solve the security problem, but this brought up another issue. With hundreds of passengers clambering through the station, ticket sellers and passengers couldn’t hear each another. If only they could talk through the glass…

So Norcon created (and patented) the Talk-Thru Unit, a simple and effective way for anyone to speak through a pane of glass. This let the sellers and customers hear each other clearly through glass in the noisy environment.

Since then, Talk-Thru Units have been used throughout the world everywhere from the world’s most exclusive ski resorts to your local movie theater. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses are using Talk-Thru Units to isolate and protect their employees and customers from infection while maintaining good communication.
